About This Site
I have spent several years researching my family's history specifically on the Baublitz side. Baublitz is not a very common name and I found that many of the people with that name lived in just a few select counties throughout the United States. Most of them began to appear here in the mid 1800's. My next step was to determine if all of these family groups were related. My expectation is that I will find that all of these individuals relate back to just a handful of German immigrants.
The challenge for me was finding a way to share my work with other Baublitz family members and integrate all of our work to produce a united family tree. I started off sharing GEDCOM files using tools such as Family Tree Maker. However, I found several difficulties with this method. First of all, many of the GEDCOM files available for download contain errors which go uncorrected because the files have been abandoned by their author. This results in the continual propagation of invalid data. The second challenge is that by it's very nature file sharing results in disconnected data sets that must continually be merged.
I found Wikipedia to be very useful and thought that applying the Wiki concept to genealogy research would solve the challenges described above. So I began building this web site as a place for people to share and edit each others work in order to build a united and living family tree. While my original purpose for this project was to build the Baublitz family tree, use of the site is not limited to that family name. Feel free to contribute information for your own family.
